Riding around Kata and Karon

  • The roads are hilly. The climb from Kata to Karon Viewpoint and on to Promthep Cape and Nai Harn is steep in places. For two people, pick a 160cc scooter (Click 160 or PCX) over a 110–125cc.
  • Ride slowly on the beach roads, where people cross between cars and parked scooters.
  • Rain makes bends slippery. Slow down before corners, especially downhill.
  • Wear a helmet. It's the law in Thailand, and two helmets come with every bike on Goja.
  • Patong is about 20–30 minutes north along the coast road if you want a night out, with steep hills on the way.

Licence

You need a motorbike licence from home plus an International Driving Permit that covers motorcycles. Police checkpoints do check, and travel insurance may not pay after an accident if you ride without the right licence.
